Providing Access To Justice

Housing Protection Program

Our Housing Protection Program intensified during COVID to provide free legal representation to Lowcountry residents facing the threat of eviction. Today, it continues and has expanded beyond eviction prevention to address many of the additional challenges renters face—all with the goal of helping clients avoid homelessness.

FACT:

Housing protection programs, especially those offering legal aid or rental assistance for tenants, can significantly reduce the risk of eviction and homelessness.

We assist with eviction defense, health and safety concerns, non-refund of security deposits, tenant rights violations, and unsafe or unhealthy living conditions.

Housing protection programs improve health outcomes by reducing the stress of housing insecurity, enabling families to live in safer, healthier environments. They also help children grow up in more stable homes, increasing their chances of success in school and providing greater opportunities for learning and development.

Landlords in South Carolina may not:

  • Fail to provide habitable living conditions.
  • Enter a rental property without tenant consent, except in emergencies.
  • Evict tenants without proper legal procedures.
  • Engage in discriminatory practices.
  • Make arbitrary changes to lease terms during the lease period.
  • Handle security deposits in ways that violate state law.
